The Manchester Collection

It’s a long story, but a friend of mine Nigel Caddock was holding the TopPonds Expo weekend at his establishment and I muscled my way in offering a full collection of new paintings for his walls……………..here is the artwork for the Expo.

The Picasso Sanke

The Picasso Sanke

The Picasso Sanke

A truely beautiful koi, let alone the painting, this is one of Anne’s all time favourite koi paintings.

The koi looks like it will swim off the canvas.

The koi itself was owned by Pete Waterman (of Stock, Aitken and Waterman; the record producer responsible for Kylie, Jason Donavan and who can forget Sonia) I tripped over a photograph of the gorgeous koi and had to paint it.

Acrylic on canvas.

A gift to my son and his fiancee, because Kate loves penguins.

This another commissioned painting, it is on a 5 foot high by 18 inches wide canvas.

This koi carp is life size at almost 3 feet long she is a stunning fish.

As you can see the back ground is already in, this acrylic on canvas and I almost finger painted the background in putting the paint on with a brush and then smoothing it with my fingers to attain the soft effect that I required.

I have also put gesso over any areas that where over painted in the background, there is still a visible colour shadow around the edge of the koi.

The scales are the next piece to tackle, I will mark where all of the scales are to go on the koi.
This is a laborious task but the benefits later in the process of this painting will be worth it.

A mixed grey gesso is used to mark each and every scale, I do not worry too much about a few looking out of alignment as the scales will be only a slight effect in the completed work.

After eight hours of painting I have stopped today, as the painting of scales can tire my eyes quickly.

Lots more tomorrow and hopefully colour by Wednesday.

Koi painting (part 1)

When I was taken to visit a clients pond recently, after he showed an interest in some of my work, I went along unprepared for a glorious site.

A huge pond full of ‘my type’ of koi, this commission will not be a chore

Background of koi painting

The koi are blocked out with black and white gesso, it is mixed and used to offer shading which I use as a map to follow later.
